GRACE is based on the true story of Graciela Santos, a Colombian immigrant arrested twice during immigration raids at her sewing factory. While held in custody, Ms. Santos was interrogated by Miguel Angel Cardona, a federal agent for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Mr. Cardona soon discovered that Ms. Santos had been victimized by Fred Almez, a notorious scam artist who targeted Latin immigrants. In order to save her from deportation, Mr. Cardona granted Ms. Santos immunity if she agreed to testify against Mr. Almez. Ms. Santos agreed. She and Mr. Cardona remained life-long friends.

Her son, Julian Pimiento, wrote a short story about his mother while taking a creative writing course. The story was published in Kindred Voices: The Workers Writing Project, and was later adapted by writer/director alrick brown and shot in the spring of 2008.
